What a weird time to be alive. When I rang in 2020, I had no clue what was in store for me but for sure I never expected this. This is truly a live episode of “when you plan, god laughs” that no one saw coming. I hope everyone is doing their part by following the guidelines and being responsible – the more we cooperate the sooner we can get back to life as we know it.
I’ve been adjusting to this new normal of working from home and leaving the house as little as possible and while there’s been some anxiety and feelings of uncertainty, a few things have made this time more bearable. Here’s a look at what I’ve been currently enjoying.
This is THE MOST INSANE series Netflix has EVER given us and I do not know if the words “Thank You” are enough. Seriously, mayhem is an understatement and it was the best distraction I needed at this time. Without giving too much away (for those who haven’t seen it yet), this docuseries follows a group of cat breeders and takes on the wildest ride with the most eccentric cast. From polyamorous relationships, alleged murder, JAIL, animal abuse and quests for fame, the level of shock value cannot be beat. PLEASE WATCH THIS if you haven’t already. I’m interested to hear your thoughts.
After the craziness that was Tiger King I needed to watch something a little more wholesome so settled on this. Only 4 episodes long and based on a true story, this series follows the main character Esther who flees from her Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn to Berlin with the help of her piano teacher. The storytelling is beautiful and coupled with the costuming (the wedding scene was my favorite), it also gives you a glimpse into the insular community of Hasidic Jews and their way of life. The actress playing Esther was amazing and had me hooked from episode 1 – so much so that I watched the entire series in 1 sitting. I highly recommend this and give it 2 thumbs up!
Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival’s #WatchAMovieOnUs Series – One of the must attend events on our social calendar every year for me is the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. I always encourage all my friends to go see at least one movie as the catalog of Caribbean films is so impressive and really shows just how much talent we have. During this time where everyone is urged to stay home, the film festival is giving us 14 days of free films from March 28 – April 10. Every day, a new Caribbean film is made available online for 24 hours. So far I’ve watched a documentary on Calypso Rose and Songs of Redemption which takes a look at a music program for the inmates at a prison in Kingston. You can find the link for the featured movie of the day on their website here and also follow them on social media at @ttfilmfestival on Instagram , Twitter and Facebook.
Eat Ah Food’s YouTube Channel – Food is truly one of my great passions and I can watch, read and research food related content all day long. When planning a trip, one of the first things I always research is the country’s food options, whether it be dining at restaurants or street food, and make my lists accordingly. I’ve been following the Eat ah Food blog for some time now and recently got into their YouTube channel which is not only of the highest quality but also so engaging and addicting. Eat Ah Food is a locally founded platform that highlights local (and the wider Caribbean) food content such as recipes, restaurants and culinary personalities. It really gives you an insight to and appreciation for our culinary landscape which to me is one of the best in the world.
Dr Teal’s Restore and Replenish Body Wash – Using this has truly become one of the highlights of my day. I’ve been using this at night and it truly helps me in terms of winding down and relaxing. Formulated with Epsom salts and a calming, relaxing scent, (orange oil and bergamot) I can say it’s a welcome addition to my shower routine, especially now when all the days seem to run into each other and everything seems exhausting.
Burt’s Bees Hand Salve – With the extra focus on hand washing and sanitizing, this has been one of my most used products. I usually have a few tins of these in my personal stash especially for when I travel but they’ve come in even handier now as I don’t want ashy hands after all the hand washing. This hand salve really locks in moisture and you don’t need to constantly be applying as is the case with regular lotions. I’m not sure if I’ve seen these in Pennywise but I know they stock the Burt’s Bees brand so you can check there. Starlite is also a great option as they have a wider range of the brand’s products.
Massimo Dutti Manhattan Light Eau de Parfum – A light, airy floral-ish scent with long staying power and perfect for everyday use. I got this in a trio box set (the other 2 scents are Evening Whispers and Souffle Marais) last summer, only just recently remembered it and have been putting it to use almost every day over the past month. Even now that I’m working from home I spritz a bit on after getting dressed for the day – I like to think it brings some normalcy and routine to a day that is anything but.
And that concludes this roundup. I hope everyone is staying safe, washing hands, following the guidelines and doing their best to cope in this situation. Let me just reiterate how important it is to protect your mental health especially now as tensions can run high as well as feelings of uncertainty. I’ve personally taken to reducing the amount of COVID-19 related media I consume as this can only heighten your anxieties. Find something that works for you and practice it daily. In the meantime, stay safe, and thank you for reading :)
